Seahawks Defensive Back Grades Regular Season Game 2011-6
Oct 28th
Seahawks Secondary Player Grades
The funny thing about this group is that individually they all played pretty average with the exception of Kennard Cox (who stunk it up pretty bad) but as a group playing in the scheme of the defense they held the Browns to only 159 yards passing. I find myself torn at this point because these are individual player grades but at the same time their effort led to the production by the defense.
I think what I will do is leave out the sum of their play (at least for now) and just evaluate each player on his own.
Cornerback
1) Chris Maragos (C+)
Chris was signed from the practice squad earlier in the week.
THE GOOD:
He mad a nice tackle on special teams while covering a kick.
THE BAD:
It is sad that I have him listed as the top grade here.
2) Richard Sherman, Walter Thurmond and Brandon Browner (C)
Last week: Richard B+, Walter B and Brandon B+
5) Kennard Cox (D)
Last week B-
THE GOOD:
Cox had a few plays where he had good coverage.
THE BAD:
On the play when Josh Cribbs muffed the fair catch Kennard ran behind Cribbs but if he had stayed in front when Josh muffed the punt he would have been in a position to compete for the ball. He got called for the block in the back on Leo’s big punt return. I think it was a bogus call but the fact remains that Cox was reaching for the guy and gave them an opportunity to make a bad call. He should have kept his hands to himself there was nothing he could have done because he was out of position anyway. He had 2 missed tackles including one that would have been a sack.
Safety
1) Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Jeron Johnson (C)
Last week: Earl B+, Kam A+ and Jeron B-
4) Atari Bigby (C-)
Last week C-
THE GOOD:
If he had only made one big play
THE BAD:
He missed a tackle on a punt coverage.
Seahawks Player Grades Regular Season 2011-5
Oct 21st
Seahawks Player Grades from the Giants game.
First of all let me apologize for not getting the grades done like usually. I have been very sick and unable to sit at the computer to type them out.
I was able to do all the game notes and I have all the information I would normally put out but I think in the interest of getting the grades out I will post the actual grade for every player and if I get a request about why a players grade is what it is I will add to this post.
Thank you all for your patience.
The last grade I gave out was the quarterbacks so I will start here with the running backs
Running Back
1) Leon Washington (A-)
Last week he led the running backs with a B+
2) Marshawn Lynch (B+)
Last week C+
3) Justin Forsett (B-)
Last week B
4) Michael Robinson (C+)
Last week C-
THE GOOD:
He did a very nice job on special teams while blocking on punt returns and getting downfield in a hurry on a kick return and getting in on a tackle inside the Giants 15-yard line.
THE BAD:
He ran into the back of his own player and fumbled the ball near the giants goal line. Darrell Bevell should have never handed him the ball three straight times but it is his job to hold onto the ball every time his number is called.
Wide Receiver
1) Doug Baldwin (A+)
Last week he led the receivers with an A-
2) Ben Obomanu (B+)
Last week B
3) Sidney Rice and Golden Tate (B)
Last week Sidney had a C+ and Golden did not receive a grade.

His grade was extremely limited this week because he was injured on the Seahawks seventh offensive play.

Defensive Back Grades
Cornerback
1) Marcus Trufant (B+)
THE GOOD:
Marcus made a few nice open field tackles and played a wide receiver screen perfectly diving around a blocker to make the tackle. He had an interception late in the second quarter as the Cardinals were driving down for a possible field goal.
THE BAD:
He was called for pass interference and there are plays where you would like to see him tighten up his coverage just a little.
2) Walter Thurmond (C+)
THE GOOD:
Walter had a nice block on an interception return and had a TFL (Tackle for loss).
THE BAD:
Thurmond missed a block on a punt return.
3) Kennard Cox and Brandon Browner (C-)
THE GOOD:
Kennard is a good special teams player. Brandon had really good coverage at times including the play where Kam Chancellor intercepted the ball. He also had a nice block on a punt return.
THE BAD:
Cox missed a tackle on punt coverage. Browner got called for illegal contact that negated Earl’s interception. He fell down in coverage on one play and at times played softer then you would like to see.
Safety
1) Kam Chancellor (A)
THE GOOD:
On Earl’s interception return he had a big hit on Todd Heap. He got flagged on the play but it looked completely legal to me. Kam got a quarterback hit while blitzing. He had a pass defensed and on 3rd and short came in and got a TFL. With 1:08 left in the game he intercepted a pass in Seahawks territory. After the offense couldn’t pick up a first down they punted it. On the punt return the Cardinals tried a lateral and Kam almost intercepted it but he did interrupt the play and the rest of the team was able to get over and keep it from being a big play.
THE BAD:
Chancellor was late getting over to help Brandon Browner over the top.
2) Earl Thomas (B-)
THE GOOD:
Earl had an interception that was negated by a penalty and got a pass deflection on a play where he blitzed. On that play he started from 8 yards back and timed it perfect as he started to run in for his blitz right as the center snapped the ball. He did a nice job crashing in on the run.
THE BAD:
Thomas missed a couple tackles including one on kick coverage.
3) Atari Bigby (C)
Bigby will most likely start in Kam Chancellor’s place tomorrow against the Atlanta Falcons.

Sep 10th
Cornerback
Richard Sherman (B-)
Last week D+
THE GOOD:
Richard was pretty solid in coverage knocking a ball out of a receivers hands and deflecting a pass most corners would not be able to make that play on in the air that would have been a touchdown. In the running game he held his ground and forced the runner back inside.
THE BAD:
Sherman had a missed tackle on special teams and was called for Pass Interference.
Brandon Browner and Marcus Trufant (C+)
Last week: Brandon B and Marcus B+
THE GOOD:
Brandon Had the block on Golden Tate’s big punt return that sprung him. Marcus did a nice job fighting off a blocker to remain in the play.
THE BAD:
Neither player played very much and will be the starters to open the regular season so they didn’t get much of a chance to make plays.
Kennard Cox and Byron Maxwell (C-)
Last week: Kennard C+ and Byron B+
THE GOOD:
Kennard has finally played his way off the team. Byron showed his ability to tackle making a nice open field tackle.
THE BAD:
Cox wasn’t confident in his speed as proven by giving a guy a 15 yard cushion in man coverage and filling his hips around on his second or third step so he wouldn’t get beat deep. This left him with no chance to cover anything underneath. Maxwell was playing like a rookie getting called for a pass interference and a face mask penalty
Walter Thurmond (D+)
Last week D+
THE GOOD:
Walter had a nice open field tackle and showed awareness on a play that the raiders were running a wide receiver pick on third down. He saw it coming and gave the necessary ground to avoid the pick while keeping up with the wide receiver on the slant. Although the receiver caught the ball Walter was able to stop him short of the marker.
THE BAD:
Thurmond Fell down in coverage but was smart enough to take the receiver down with him instead of allowing the guy a chance for and easy touchdown because he did not have any safety help over the top. He was playing too loose in coverage. On a punt return he muffed a punt and lost it.
Safety
Josh Pinkard (B-)
Last week C-
THE GOOD:
Josh played in the box well crashing in on the run and had a quarterback pressure.
THE BAD:
You would like to see him make more plays.
Earl Thomas, Jeron Johnson and Atari Bigby (C)
Last week: Earl led all Safeties with a B, Jeron C and Atari C+
Mark Legree (C-)
Last week C+
THE GOOD:
He did not make any above average plays in the game.
THE BAD:
He showed he needs to work on his hands when he dropped an interception thrown right at him.
